On a certain day in March, the rain stopped overnight in the Tokyo area, and the sunlight that felt like spring was pouring down. Enticed by the mild weather, I suddenly thought of heading to Ginza. My destination was the newly started spring exhibition “Super! Cherry Blossoms” at the Art Aquarium Museum GINZA.

The Goldfish Waterfall

The Art Aquarium Museum GINZA is one of Japan’s largest “goldfish museums,” featuring artistic displays of various unique goldfish breeds such as Wakin, Ryukin, and Dutch Lionhead. Even those who are not interested in goldfish will surely enjoy the beautifully enchanting Japanese space, where one can indulge in a world of fantasy and momentarily forget the everyday.

The Corridor of Goldfish

I was struck by how the goldfish were beautifully presented, and upon investigation, I found that the bottom of the tank containing the goldfish was lined with Nishijin-ori, and works arranged with stone lanterns used Japan’s representative stone, granite, showcasing traditional Japanese beauty in every detail. The vibrant and fantastical space of Ikebana and goldfish, called “Flowerium,” is a collaboration with Shogo Kariyazaki.

Photography and video recording are allowed. The space is actively offered to visitors as a photogenic environment, and tips for taking good photos are introduced on the website. On the day I visited, visitors were enjoying taking pictures with their smartphones, and professional photographers and models were also doing photo shoots.
